Fostering academic growth and cultural identity for Years 1–8

Programme Overview

KASP (Kids’ Academic Success Programme) is a structured academic and cultural education programme for children in Years 1–8, designed to support both classroom success and cultural competence.

The programme offers a growing selection of curriculum-aligned academic courses and culturally enriching classes, giving families the flexibility to choose pathways that support their child’s learning goals and identity.

Courses are taught in a supportive, culturally safe environment by educators who understand the needs of migrant and refugee families, with a particular emphasis on building confidence in literacy, numeracy, and cultural understanding.

Who It’s For

Programme Structure & Course Options

KASP is divided into modular courses that families can opt into based on their child’s age, interests, and learning needs:

Academic Courses:

  • Literacy Skills – reading comprehension, writing, and vocabulary
  • Numeracy Skills – foundational math through to age-appropriate problem-solving

Cultural & Identity Courses:

  • Islamic Culture & Values – exploring traditions, history, and core concepts
  • Arabic Language – beginner to intermediate instruction in reading, speaking, and writing

Each course is tailored to specific year levels (Years 1–8) and designed to reinforce school learning while building confidence, cultural pride, and social connection.

FAQ

1. When does KASP run?

KASP operates during the New Zealand school year, which is divided into four terms. Courses start at the beginning of each term and run weekly until the term ends. New enrolments open in the final weeks of each preceding term.

2. Can my child enrol in more than one course per term?

Yes! Children are welcome to enrol in multiple courses if they are age-appropriate. For example, a student might enrol in both Literacy Skills and Arabic Language in the same term. We’ll work with you to coordinate schedules if needed.

3. Do the courses follow the NZ Curriculum?

Our academic courses (literacy and numeracy) are informed by the New Zealand Curriculum, with added support tailored for the needs of migrant and refugee students. The goal is to reinforce classroom learning and give students extra confidence and clarity.

4. Where are the classes held, and how do I choose a location?

KASP is delivered in person across four locations in Christchurch and Selwyn:
Burnside
Halswell
Hornby
Rolleston
When enrolling, you can choose the location closest to you. Availability may vary by course and site.

5. Are the classes religious in nature?

Only our Islamic Culture & Values course includes religious content — and it’s presented in a values-based, age-appropriate, and inclusive way. Academic courses (e.g. literacy and numeracy) are secular and focus entirely on academic development.

6. Is transport provided to and from KASP classes?

No, transport is not provided as part of the KASP programme. Families are responsible for dropping off and picking up their children from their chosen location. We recommend choosing the most convenient site from our four options: Burnside, Halswell, Hornby, or Rolleston.

7. What happens if I’m late to pick up my child?

We understand that unexpected delays can happen. A 10-minute grace period is allowed after each class ends. However, if a child is not picked up within that time, a late pickup fee may be charged to help cover staff time and venue use. We encourage families to plan ahead and communicate with us if they’re running late.

Ready to Help Your Child Succeed?

Whether you’re focused on academic support, cultural learning, or both — KASP offers a flexible, enriching pathway for your child.

Spaces are limited each term and enrolment fills quickly, so we encourage early registration.
